The Garden Without Gates — a Substack from Timor-Leste
Introduction: "Why This Substack Exists" - June 2026
I’m Martin Hardie. I live at 960 metres in Aileu, Timor-Leste, and I’m finishing a book called The Garden Without Gates about AI, Tianxia, and the world after the American unipolar moment.
This Substack is the workshop;
excerpts, research notes, arguments that got cut from the book, and dispatches from a country most people can’t place on a map but that happens to sit precisely where the next geopolitical orders are being tested.
Why Timor-Leste? Because some questions look different from the periphery. And because the book’s central argument — that the open-source, multipolar AI ecosystem is rearranging both technology and power — is happening right now, whether Silicon Valley acknowledges it or not.
First real post coming soon: the book’s Reader’s Note, which explains the project, the method, and what it means when a human and an AI write together. If you want to know what this is building toward, start there.
